PERIODONTAL DISEASE

About PERIODONTAL DISEASE

Periodontal disease, often referred to as gum disease, is a common dental condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It’s essential to understand the causes, signs, and treatment options for periodontal disease to maintain optimal oral health. At Oragen, we are committed to treating gum disease to help you achieve healthy gums and a beautiful smile.

We Do

What is Periodontal Disease? Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition that affects the gum and bone that surround and support your teeth. It typically starts as gingivitis, which is characterized by inflammation and bleeding of the gums. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress into a more severe form of gum disease known as
periodontitis.

What Causes Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is primarily caused by the accumulation of dental plaque and tartar on teeth. Other contributing factors include: • Poor Oral Hygiene: Inadequate
brushing and flossing can allow plaque to build up on teeth, leading to gum inflammation.
• Tobacco Use: Smoking or chewing
tobacco can increase the risk of gum disease and make treatment less effective.
• Genetics: Some individuals may be
genetically predisposed to developing periodontal disease.
• Medical Conditions: Conditions like diabetes, autoimmune disorders, and certain medications can increase
susceptibility to gum disease.
• Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, menstruation, and menopause can make gums more sensitive and prone to inflammation.

Signs and Symptoms

Early detection and treatment of periodontal disease are crucial. Some common signs and symptoms include:
-Bleeding Gums: Especially during brushing or flossing.
-Red or Swollen Gums: Healthy gums should appear pink and firm.
-Persistent Bad Breath: Often a result of
bacterial buildup in the mouth.
-Gum Recession: Teeth may appear longer as gums pull away.
-Loose Teeth: A sign of advanced gum disease where the bone-supporting teeth are affected. -Pus Between Teeth and Gums: A sign of infection.

Is Periodontitis Reversible?

Early stages of periodontitis, which we call gingivitis, are generally reversible. However if not caught early enough and the bone supporting the teeth is already affected, aka periodontitis, it is NOT reversible. Periodontitis can be managed and controlled through professional dental treatments, improved oral hygiene and lifestyle changes. Early intervention is essential to prevent further damage.

How To Treat Periodontal Disease?

Our dental hygiene team at Oragen offers a detailed range of periodontal treatment options tailored to your unique needs: 1. Biological testing of the oral microbiome: This allows us to create a client specific approach by determining which particular bacteria are contributing to your condition. The root
cause.
2. Scaling and Root Planing: This deep cleaning procedure removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline, smoothing the root surfaces to prevent further buildup.
3. Topical Antibiotics: Local antibiotic treatments may be applied to target infection and promote healing.
4. Laser Therapy: Advanced laser technology can be used to remove infected tissue and promote gum reattachment.
5. Gum Surgery: In severe cases, a referral for surgical procedures may be necessary to
repair damaged gums and bone
